The area once hosted 361 Namboothiri families who formed the Vendhanad Yogam, a council responsible for governance, education, and spiritual guidance. Traditionally, the Maha Ganapathy Temple served as the ceremonial ground for appointing officials to the Sanskrit Vidhyapeedam in Kumbalam. These inductions were solemnized before Lord Ganapathy, with prayers and a symbolic clapping ritual. The legendary Vedic teacher, Prabhakara Gurukkal, an ardent devotee of Lord Ganesha, began each day with prayers at this temple. His residence, Bhattamana, once stood beside the temple. The temple’s Swayambhoo idol is unique crafted from both Krishna Sila and Rudraksha Sila. Lord Shiva is worshipped as the main Upadevata, along with Naga Yakshi and Brahma Rakshas. One of the temple’s most celebrated traditions is the Vinayaka Chaturthi Oottu, historically organized by the Chakkanat Kaimal family. Though discontinued due to declining family fortunes, this grand feast has been revived and now thrives through community support, transcending caste and religion.
Festivals
Major festivals include Vinayaka Chaturthi, Navaratri, Ramayana Masam, and Ganesha Sangeetholsavam, a 9-day musical tribute held each December. The temple is also known for granting heartfelt wishes one well-known example being a non-Hindu couple blessed with a child after sincere prayers.
Modern initiatives like Chembola Meyyal, Pithala Pothiyal, a newly built Nadapandal, and a tall Kodimaram reflect the community’s devotion. Plans are underway to build an auditorium, and devotees are invited to contribute generously.
